NAVAJO CODE TAlKER HONOR RUN

Honoring the legendary Navajo Code Talkers!

Wednesday, August 14, 2024 - National Code Talker Day

Welcome to the Navajo Code Talker Honor Run!

REGISTRATION – Online registration for the Code Talker Honor Run is now open through race morning on August 14 at the NavajoYES website: www.navajoyes.org   Early registration is $20 for all runners to cover costs of the event and to support the Code Talker Poster Project.   Registration will include an event t-shirt, race bib, post-race snack and your choice of posters from the Navajo Code Talker Poster Series.

LOCATION – The location of the run is at the Window Rock Veteran’s Park, which is the same venue as 2023.  It will be a busy day so you will want to arrive early.  Parking is best on the road approaching the NN Council and the President’s office building.  Race time is 7:00 a.m.

PACKET PICK-UP – Packet pick-up will be available on Wednesday at the Veteran’s Park.  You may pick up your packet up to an hour before the start of the race.

COURSE – The main course is a 2.0 mile loop on the Code Talker Trail, which begins and ends at the Veteran’s Park.  The course is singletrack trail.  It is a scenic route, but challenging.  The course is subject to slight variation at the discretion of event organizers..

AID STATIONS – There will be pre-race breakfast bars and bananas at the start and finish lines. This is a cupless event so runners should plan to bring their own hydration system.

WEATHER – August weather in Window Rock will likely be mild or warm in the morning, so keep eye on the forecast prior to the race.  The threat of thunderstorms (generally in the afternoon) always looms in August.

LODGING – Lodging is available at Quality Inn in Window Rock and Navajoland Inn in St. Michael’s.  There are ample lodging options available in Gallup, New Mexico.

CODE TALKER POSTER PROJECT

NavajoYES has created a series of posters of Navajo Code Talkers, including a new portrait this year:

Thomas Begay.  All posters in the series will be available at the event, including:Dan Akee, Samuel Sandoval, Merril Sandoval, Roy Hawthorne, John Kinsel, Sr., Alfred Newman, Samuel Holiday, Peter MacDonald, Jack Morgan, William George, David Jordan, Walter Cronemeyer, Sydney Bedoni, John Pinto, Benjamin Cleveland, Bahe Ketchum and Harry Benally.

Our mission with this project is to honor the legacy of these heroes by making Code Talker posters available to every school, chapter house and home around the Nation. The original paintings – created by artists Elwyn Shorthair, Shaundiin Yesslith, Irving Toddy and the late James King – are presented to the Code Talker’s family.
