Description

Run Barbados Weekend is an exhilarating three day road running event with five races on routes that are AIMS-IAAF certified, scenic and historic. The Start/Finish at the Bay Street Esplanade is alongside the spectacular Carlisle Bay with over a mile of white sand lining the crystal waters of the Bay. The weekend kicks off Friday night with the Signia Fun Mile and Pasta Party.
First hosted in 1983 with two races: the “Bridgetown 10K” and the Marathon, this exciting event has evolved into one of the premier sporting attractions on the island with five running races over the weekend. Chip timing, finisher medals, challenge medals (if you finish three races), a race shirt (dry-fit), local entertainment on routes and at finish.
Over the past three decades the series has attracted runners of varying ages and abilities from recreational to world class from all over the world. The first-ever IAAF World Marathon champion, Australia’s Rob de Castella won the first Run Barbados men’s 10K race. Hugh Jones, the first British man to win the London Marathon (1982) won the Barbados Marathon six times. The event attracts about 2,000 entries annually, of which about eighty percent of the competitors hail from countries all over the world and the remaining 20% from the very enthusiastic local running community. The runners are a wonderful mix of recreational runners of all ages, triathletes, competitive masters runners and a few elite runners.
The event doesn’t have the large expo or generous loot bags associated with mega-marathons, but boasts its own unique characteristics. The AIMS-IAAF certified routes through the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Bridgetown, the Start/Finish at the picturesque Esplanade, friendly spectators and the wonderful camaraderie that develops between runners over the three-day schedule are distinctive features that result in a highly memorable experience. This leads to runners, locals and foreigners, returning year after year, and the longevity of this event can be attributed to these loyal supporters.
The races include : Cave Shepherd Marathon, Fortress Half-Marathon, Colombian Emeralds Int'l 10K, Cave Shepherd Visa Credit Card 5K and the Signia Fun Mile. The festivities kick off on a Friday night with the "Signia Fun Mile" and Pasta Party. Saturday afternoon the Cave Shepherd Visa Credit Card 5K & Colombian Emeralds International 10K at 4pm and 4:45 pm respectively. Early Sunday morning the Fortress Half-Marathon & Cave Shepherd & Co Marathon set out at 5am taking advantage of cooler temperatures. Dec 7-9, 2018.
