Frequently Asked Questions

Participant Questions

Why does registration cost $20.71?

  • The $20.71 registration fee represents the 2,071 stairs firefighters climbed on September 11, 2001. It also covers the items in each participant's finisher bag, including a commemorative T-shirt, protein bar, and bottled water.

Are we climbing the stadium bleachers or the stairs?

  • Participants will climb the stadium stairs; not the bleachers. Both the stairs going up and coming down will count toward your total. The route will be clearly marked with signs and flagging tape.

Do I have to climb all 2,071 stairs?

  • The goal is to try. The reward isn't just finishing, but what you take away from the experience. We climb to remember what happened on September 11, 2001, to reflect on the courage and sacrifice of the firefighters who responded that day, and to honor the firefighters who serve our community every day. There is no penalty if you can't climb all 2,071 steps. We encourage everyone to do their best, but your health and safety are always top priority.

Is this a race?

  • No. This is a memorial stair climb, not a timed race. The goal is to honor the sacrifices made on September 11, challenge yourself, and support our local fire departments.

Can I take breaks during the climb?

  • Yes! Participants are encouraged to climb at their own pace and take breaks whenever needed.

Can I sign up on the day of?

  • No. All participants must register online before the event. Participant T-shirts will be ordered on August 23. While we will order a small number of extras, we cannot guarantee your preferred size after that date. Finisher bags are also pre-packaged and marked with each participant's name, so late registrations may need to wait longer so a volunteer can piece together their bag. Participants are also required to read through and sign a waiver online. For these reasons, we are unable to accept registrations on the day of the event.

What happens if it rains?

  • Firefighters show up for us in all kinds of weather, so we will show up for them. The event will continue rain or shine. The only reason we would cancel is in the event of lightning or unsafe conditions. If rain is in the forecast, please come prepared with rain gear, such as a poncho, rain jacket, or an umbrella.

Do I have to live in Blacksburg to participate?

  • No! Everyone is welcome. Participants are already registered from communities including Blacksburg, Gaffney, Gastonia, Spartanburg, and beyond. Whether you're coming to challenge yourself, honor our first responders, or support a great cause, we'd love to have you join us.

Why should I do this?

  • Because every step has a purpose. This climb is an opportunity to challenge yourself, remember the sacrifice of the 343 firefighters who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, and honor the firefighters who continue serving Cherokee County today. You'll leave with a greater appreciation for those who answer the call and the satisfaction of being part of something meaningful.
