Why Golden Gate Fields?
The race is being hosted by Direct Action Everywhere (DxE). DxE is an international grassroots network of animal liberation activists founded in 2013 in the Bay Area.
Since 2020, nearly 175 horses have been killed at racetracks across California with 56 of the deaths happening at Golden Gate Fields (GGF). In November 2020, GGF was forced to shut down after a coronavirus outbreak infected more than 300 people. The rising death toll of animals along with the COVID outbreak has garnered concern from the public and the California Horse Racing Board. We are calling for the track to be shut down permanently, for the horses and the workers. Instead of using this valuable land space for an outdated industry that profits off gambling and animal cruelty, it could be used to house members of our community who sleep on the streets.
In March of 2021, 4 activists took direct action and chained themselves to one another on the racetrack which halted racing operations for the entire day. The event was live-streamed on Facebook. This generated massive buzz online and has resulted in a civil suit between GGF and the activists.
DxE's work has been covered in the New York Times, Washington Post, and by Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Glenn Greenwald.
