ABOUT CASA
CASA is a national program dedicated to providing quality court advocacy services to abused and neglected children under the jurisdiction of the Dependency Court. More than two million children have been helped by the program since its inception in 1977.
The mission of CASA is simple – “to support and promote court-appointed volunteer advocacy for abused and neglected children so that they can thrive in safe, permanent homes.”
CASA makes a difference in the life of a child. Cases involving a CASA volunteer are more likely to be permanently closed than cases where a CASA volunteer is not involved. In an overburdened child welfare system, the unique one-on-one relationship that forms between the CASA volunteer and dependent child is often the most stable, positive relationship the child has. CASA volunteers are a powerful voice for children. They make recommendations to the court that are in the child’s best interest and advise the court about what the child needs and wants, while providing emotional support, stability and caring that every child deserves.
While CASA is a national program, it has been a part of Northern Valley Catholic Social Service, Inc. for the past 15 years. The program was first established with NVCSS out of our Butte County office in 2000. With major support from the courts, the Glenn County CASA program came on board in 2007 and CASA of Shasta County was established in 2010. We are currently in the development phase of expanding the program into Tehama County. In our local communities, there are nearly 1,000 children who are separated from their families right now. Less than 15% of those children are being served by one of our CASA volunteers.
CASA of Butte, Glenn, Shasta and Tehama Counties is a program of Northern Valley Catholic Social Service, Inc. (NVCSS), a nonprofit established in 1986 with a 501 (c)(3) designation.
