Event Description
September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.
On average, more than 290 children and adolescents in the U.S. are diagnosed with cancer every week, according to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
Leukemia is the most common type of cancer in children and teens. Among children and teens diagnosed with cancer, 1 in 3 will have a type of leukemia, according to the American Cancer Society.
To celebrate survivorship and honor those who have passed away, we will be hosting an untimed 2K walk/run.
The event is being held in honor of Charlie and Bryan Benitez. The two were raised in Coalinga and both battled leukemia.
We welcome participants of all ages and levels.
The event is family-friendly and takes place rain or shine!
Please NO PETS, but strollers are welcome.
All proceeds from the race will be donated to The BumbleBee Foundation which supports pediatric cancer families.
Honoring Bryan & Charlie
Charlie and Bryan Benitez were more than brothers—they were warriors whose courage, faith, and love left a lasting impact on everyone who knew them. Bryan was diagnosed with leukemia at just three years old and spent the next nine years fighting a relentless battle against the disease. His journey took him through every treatment available, including chemotherapy, CAR-T therapies, a bone marrow transplant, and experimental treatments across the country, even traveling to Philadelphia when no additional options remained in California. Despite enduring more than most adults could imagine, Bryan never lost hope. He often reassured his family by saying, "Everything is going to be okay because God has the last word." On September 25, 2024, at the age of 12, Bryan passed away after contracting COVID while hospitalized for further treatment.
As the Benitez family grieved Bryan's declining health, another devastating chapter began. Just 15 days before Bryan's passing, his older brother Charlie was diagnosed with leukemia at age 24. Charlie received treatment at Fresno Community Hospital, Clovis Community Hospital, and later Stanford Adult Hospital, where he pursued experimental therapies in hopes of overcoming the disease. The oldest of four siblings, Charlie faced his diagnosis with the same courage and unwavering faith that defined his younger brother. Tragically, after a brave five-and-a-half-month fight, Charlie passed away on March 17, 2025 from appendicitis—just five days after his 25th birthday.
Losing two sons to leukemia within five and a half months changed the Benitez family forever. Yet through unimaginable heartbreak, one thing never wavered: Charlie and Bryan's faith in God. Both young men trusted God's plan, held tightly to their hope, and inspired those around them with their strength and grace. Today, their legacy lives on through the lives they touched, the faith they demonstrated, and the love they shared with family, friends, and their community. This event honors Charlie and Bryan's memory while raising awareness and support for families facing pediatric cancer. By continuing to tell their story, we ensure that their courage, their faith, and their impact will never be forgotten.
PARTICIPANT PERKS!
Each participant will receive a gold ribbon to pin on their clothing. The international awareness symbol for Childhood Cancer is the gold ribbon. Gold became the ideal choice for childhood cancer awareness because gold is a precious metal and reflects the most precious thing in our lives -- our children.
Unlike other cancer awareness ribbons, which focus on a singular type of cancer, the gold ribbon is a symbol for all forms of cancer affecting children and adolescents.
