Description
June 3 Results: The world record is back! The amazing 100 women who ran + 2 alternates standing by formed the Nike San Francisco Women's Miler Club that will go down in the Guinness World Records as the holder of the fastest women's 100 x 1 mile relay! The baton circuited the track 400 times in a blistering 9:18:32 (average mile time of 5:35), besting the prior record of 9:23:39 by over 5 minutes!
The relay was off to a great start with Vanessa Fraser's 4:58 opener, and the team kept it going until Peggy Lavelle closed the relay as the only 4x WR team member ever! Best of all, the relay was run in the spirit of representing our entire SF women's running community. Our runners spanned the ages of 13-63, and five-months pregnant Sarah Swanger posted an inspirational 6:18 mile!
Thank you to all our runners and alternates, co-sponsoring clubs, Nike and our sponsor partners, our witnesses and timekeepers, fans in the stands, the sun who showed up, and especially our unbelievable volunteers who helped with the track-set up, relay videography and photography, check-in stations and runner staging and time tracking, and, most of all, our race committee of Karla, Christine and Rachel. It takes a great city!
Congratulations to all!
Shawn Sax, Relay Director
P.S. Through the end of the relay we raised over $6,000 for Girls on the Run of the Bay Area. These proceeds are directed to programs at under-resourced schools in San Francisco. Donations are still being accepted at the donation page!
June 3, Cox Stadium (SF State), kicking off at 8 a.m.
San Francisco’s running community is joining forces as the Nike San Francisco Women’s Miler Club to break the world record in the women’s 100 x 1 mile relay! 100 different women each will run 1 mile on the track to take down the WR of 9:23:39 (5:37/mile avg. pace) that has stood since 1999. The relay is co-hosted by the San Francisco Road Runners, Dolphin South End Runners, Impala Racing Team, Pamakid Runners, and Olympic Club Foundation, and Nike is making this possible with its generous support of our women athletes.
To be eligible to run in the relay (i) athletes under the age of 50 must be proven sub 6:00 or faster milers, athletes 50 and over must be proven sub 8:00 or faster milers; and (ii) all athletes must have a connection to San Francisco, whether by virtue of birth, current or past school attendance, current residence or place of employment, or current membership in an SF-based running club.
While there is no required registration fee to participate, we request that participants who are able make a tax-deductible contribution to Girls on the Run of the Bay Area. Participant contributions will be directed to GOTR programs offered at under-resourced SF schools, building the confidence of our city's girls through running.
