Description

DUE TO EXTENSION OF THE SHELTER IN PLACE ORDERS FOR SANTA CRUZ AND ALL OTHER BAY AREA COUNTIES WE WILL BE UNABLE T O HOLD AN IN-PERSON EVENT ON APRIL 26.  WE ARE TRANSITIONING TO A VIRTUAL EVENT.  DETAILS WILL BE SENT TO ALL CURRENTLY REGISTERED PARTICIPANTS.  NEW PARTICIPANTS WILL BE ABLE TO REGISTER FOR THE VIRTUAL EVENT ONLY.

IT IS THE PRUDENT AND RIGHT THING TO DO TO MAKE ALL ATTEMPTS TO CONTAIN AND MITIGATE ANY FURTHER SPREAD OF THE VIRUS IN SANTA CRUZ COUNTY.  WE HOPE YOU WILL UNDERSTAND AND JOIN US TO SUPPORT POLIO PLUS.

You will have one week to complete your virtual race - From April 26 through to May 3.  All registered participants will be mailed a race bib, shirt, and handmade finisher medal, and instructions on how to upload your results.  You will be able to upload your results to the Run Sign Up results platform, and publish your photos to the photo platform and Facebook.  We will be doing awards for the top 3 male and female in each race distance.

Points in this race can be used for the Run Santa Cruz series as well.  So get out there and run!

We are introducing a running event points series for 2020 - RUN SANTA CRUZ - sponsored by Road iD. There will be three qualifying events - Go Green St. Patrick's Day Run - Santa Cruz Firecracker - Jingle Bell Rock.  Each event has a 1k, 5k, and 10k.   Participants will be assigned points based on overall finishing place, in all three races.  Top three male and female in each distance will win the series.  This is the first race in the RUN SANTA CRUZ Series of three events. The other two events are Santa Cruz Firecracker on July 4 , 2020 and Jingle Bell Rock on Dec 13, 2020.

We have undertaken a complete revamp of the Go Green St. Patrick's Day Runs for 2020.  First, we have moved the venue to San Lorenzo Park in Santa Cruz.  This is a beautiful park and the start/finish of the Santa Cruz Riverwalk Levee Trail.  There will be a 10K, 5K and a 1k for Kids.  We will not be doing a half marathon distance as we can't find a venue in the community that will safely support that distance.

5K Runners will do one loop of the Riverwalk Trail and 10K Runners will do two loops of the trail - passing close to the finish line on their way to the second loop (great opportunities to work on those negative splits!).  The  Kid's 1K will take place entirely in the park, with a circuit around the lakes at Duck Island.   You can see all of the maps for the event under the map tab above.

Start time for the 10K is at 9:00 am on Sunday morning so you can sleep in a bit, unless you have kids for the 1K because they are starting at 8:30!  The 5K is planned for 9:10 am.   We'll make a weekend of celebrating the green. In order to provide an amazing experience for all runners, our registration will be capped at 400 participants this year to evaluate the location change and we expect another sell out - so register soon. We will again be offering a great tech tee and finishers medals for all distances.

1K start at 8:30 am

10K start 9:00 am

5K start at 9:10 am

So get your green on and join us for the only St. Patrick's Day run in Santa Cruz!

We will be designating Rotary International's Polio Plus effort as our official beneficiary for this event.

End Polio Now

Go Green is going RED this year - designating Rotary International Polio Plus as the beneficiary for this event.

While we are not very familiar with polio in North America that doesn't mean that it isn't a global health threat.  In the early 20th century, polio was one of the most feared diseases in industrialized countries, affecting hundreds of thousands of children yearly.   Because of the research and application of effective vaccines the disease was brought under control in North America and ceased to be a public health epidemic.  That's not the case in some parts of the world - specifically Pakistan and Afghanistan (where new cased of polio have increased 5 fold in the last year.  Global travel and migrations make this a dreaded disease that needs to be eradicated.  We are so close, and Rotary International has been a key player in the effort for over 30 years.  More recently the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has been providing matching funds to extend the vaccine effort.   Please help support this effort with your race registration or an additional donation to Polio Plus.

Packet Pickup

ALL packet pickup for Go Green will happen at San Lorenzo Park on race morning.  If you are having your bib mailed it will be mailed the week before the race.

San Lorenzo Park

San Lorenzo Park and the Santa Cruz Riverwalk are located along the river in Santa Cruz , two blocks from Pacific Avenue - flowing to the ocean at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk.  The trail travels down both sides of the river and provides a view to the environmentally important watershed in the area.  Spring is a beautiful time to visit with the trees in bloom and the river full from winter rains.  The trail is paved for the entire distance of the run and you'll get to cross the river at least twice during your run.

The race will start and finish down at the big meadow in the park, called the Benchlands, located below the trail level and duck ponds on the east side of the river.

Parking

Free parking is readily available at the Santa Cruz County Government Center located on Ocean Street on weekends.  The only restriction is that you may not park in any of the spots reserved for county vehicles or employees.

There is also ample street and neighborhood parking and a low cost pay parking lot across the street from the park off River Street on the west side of river.  It's a short walk across the bridge to the start line.  There is an excellent link to parking in Santa Cruz at this website.  Lot 10 has ample parking right across from San Lorenzo Park.

Do not park in the Trader Joe's/CVS lot!  They will tow you if you aren't shopping in the stores.

We'll update parking as we get closer to the race.

Celebrate the Green!

Dressing up for the race is entirely optional but it sure is a lot of fun!  It's great to see how creative runners can be.
