The FAMpoint5k is going virtual for 2020! Traditionally, we have run the race along the Riverfront Trail and hosted the post-race celebration at Edgewater Brewery. This year, registrants get to decide where and how they participate in the event.
AND WE HAVE EXCITING NEWS FOR YOU RUNNERS! We are adding a 5k option for this year's virtual race! You spoke up and we listened. There are actually people out there that ENJOY running and we want you to know we value your efforts and stamina to run AND support an amazing cause!
So...which option will have more registrants....our 0.5k or our 5k!? This is the year for THIS or THAT! Let the fun begin!
Foster Alumni Mentors is a local non-profit which provides services to young adults who have emancipated from foster care. The FAMpoint5k is our flagship annual fundraiser and a great opportunity to learn more about the program. At less than 1/3 of a mile, it's fun for the whole family!
Race Course and Logistics:
Registration is the same, with the exception that you will also have the opportunity to create individual and/or team fundraising pages. You can run your race whenever, and wherever you want. We encourage you to get creative! We encourage everyone to use and follow our event hashtag, #fampoint5k, to engage and encourage your fellow participants via social media. These are unprecedented times, so let's make the best of it and get creative! Did someone say make your own finish line?! And race bibs! Wha....?! We will have some exciting prize categories along the way, including most creative race bib, biggest team, most funds raised, and most interesting pre-race stretch routine. These prize categories will be announced on social media. Let your personality shine through, and know that the FAM crew is with you in spirit every step of the way on your virtual race.
We will have options for early distribution of race swag... more details to come. Otherwise, all swag, race materials and other goodies will be distributed following the official event date.
If you want ideas on training regimens, race courses or good routes to walk, run, stroll, saunter, or hike-- we've got you covered! Share your course ideas with others on our Facebook page, OR check out our links to handy trail and training apps to get ideas.
Post-race Expo: While there will not be a post-race expo in person this year, we encourage everyone to get creative in celebrating and commemorating their achievements. You can still enjoy a cool, refreshing beverage, crank up some celebratory post-race tunes and do a victory dance, all from the comfort of your own home! Or, you can run your race from another rad local spot of your choosing, just please make sure you're mindful of social distancing parameters and masked up if you're in close quarters with other folks. Safety first, and fun ALWAYS!
We encourage participants to share about their virtual race experience on our social media channels, AND stay tuned for a truly unique virtual showcase of the event, which will likely include a Facebook Live event on the day of. Though you can't saunter over to the FAM booth, we ARE available via email and our social media channels to field any questions you have about FAM and help you learn more about how to get involved.
No donut station this year... (at least in person). However, we encourage everyone to setup their own creative donut and aid stations along their individual race courses. Who can setup the most "out of this world" aid station? The sky is the limit!
Most importantly... you will be supporting an outstanding, local non-profit! Foster Alumni Mentors is a 501(c)3 which serves youth, primarily ages 16+, who have experience with the foster care system and/or have aged out or emancipated from foster care. Over 23,000 foster youth age out of foster care each year, with little to no support. These youth are embarking on the already tricky transition to young adulthood, without the support many of us take for granted. About 20% of these youth will experience homelessness, 70% of females will become pregnant before the age of 21. And, less than 3% will attend college and graduate with a 4-year degree.
The events related to COVID-19 have intensified the struggle for this population. Some youth have experienced layoffs or had their work hours cut. Social distancing and quarantine also meant that some had to transition to virtual learning or work from home, which meant navigating increased needs and cost for technology resources. Social isolation can be a trigger point for individuals who have a history of trauma, and some of our program participants have other vulnerabilities that make it more difficult to reach out help.
FAM connects these youth with volunteer mentors in the community as well as a network of peer supports. Race proceeds and other donations go to support training and coordination of our mentoring program, as well as providing other resources and supports for the youth, including job search and skills training, help navigating the college admissions process, and other life skills that will promote a safe, healthy and successful transition to young adulthood. The program launched in June of 2017, and since has assisted youth in a variety of ways, including providing employment references, transportation to important meetings, mentoring and advocacy, support navigating college admissions and graduation, and a place to belong. Foster Alumni Mentors aims to support these youth, but also to celebrate their successes and growth. Help us provide services for this incredible population. BE the difference!
