The 18th Annual Backcountry Wilderness Half Marathon returns to Highlands Ranch on Saturday, November 7, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. This 13.1-mile race winds through the Douglas County East/West Trail and the scenic Highlands Ranch Backcountry Wilderness Area—offering singletrack, hills, and breathtaking views at every turn.
Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three male, female, and non-binary finishers:
1st – $600 | 2nd – $400 | 3rd – $200
Whether you're chasing a personal best or taking on the trails for the first time, this race delivers a rewarding test of endurance and Colorado beauty.
All participants will receive the following:
- Long sleeve technical race shirt
- Custom race bib
- Custom finisher medal
- Pancake breakfast from Flippin' Flapjacks
- Post-race beers compliments of Living the Dream Brewing
Course Description
The Backcountry Wilderness Half Marathon delivers a true Colorado trail running experience—challenging, scenic, and unforgettable. The single-loop, 13.1-mile course is 100% dirt, gravel, and singletrack, taking runners through the stunning Front Range landscape with opportunities to spot wildlife and soak in expansive mountain views.
Course Support
Four aid stations will be available with water and electrolytes provided. To protect the Backcountry Wilderness Area and reduce waste, runners are strongly encouraged to carry their own hydration systems in keeping with our Leave No Trace commitment.
Weather & Trail Conditions
November trail running can mean mud, snow, or ice—and we welcome it all. The race will proceed in rain, shine, sleet, or snow unless excessive moisture makes the trails unsafe or inaccessible, in which case a postponement may occur.
For the safety of both participants and wildlife, dogs and strollers are strictly prohibited.
⏰ The Backcountry Wilderness Half Marathon will have two cut-off checkpoints:
- Grigs Rd Pavilion/Approximately 8.9 miles - 2 hours 35 minutes from the last corral start, or approximately 11:45 a.m.
- Finish line - 3 hours 50 minutes from the last corral start, or approximately 1:00 pm

Typically, packet pickup takes place twice in the week before the race. You will also be able to pick up your timing bib and race swag beginning at 7:30 a.m. on race morning outside Rocky Heights Middle School.
Yes! A secure bag check will be available at the start/finish line for all registered participants. It opens at 8:30 a.m. and closes at 1:00 p.m. Runners may use either their own bag or the clear plastic bag provided at packet pickup. You’ll receive a bag tag when you pick up your race packet (and we’ll have extras on site if needed). While the area will be monitored, please avoid leaving items of significant value.
Yes! We trust the honor system, so friends or family are welcome to pick up your race packet. No ID is required—just make sure they know your name and race details.
Yes! Athletes can register online up until the race start time. Please note that all registrations are online only—no cash will be accepted.
Free parking is available at Rocky Heights Middle School and Rock Canyon High School. Parking is limited, so we encourage carpooling whenever possible.
