Louise Hammond began the Ute Mountain Ute Bear Dance Run in 1981. As the tribe's Substance Abuse Program Director, Louise wanted to provide as many activities as possible for her people to keep them busy and to guide them away from drugs and alcohol. Wellness beyond Abstinence was her creed and she spent 20 plus years working to help her people achieve a healthy lifestyle.
This race is dedicated to her and to all the Ute woman who help to make Towaoc a better place each and every day.
