This year's race will benefit the non-profit organization Jiran: The Arabic Community Action Summer based in New Britain, CT. http://schoolinjordan.middcreate.net/acas/
The mission of Jiran is to pair area students with underserved Arabic-speaking families in the New Britain area for an intensive linguistic and intercultural learning experience that better embeds families in their new communities and experientially educates students about refugee/immigrant issues in the US.
The program allows local student participants to progress in Arabic, access Arabic speakers from places they cannot study abroad (Syria, Iraq, Yemen, Sudan, etc), and learn about challenges facing Arabic-speaking families new to the US. Recently arrived Arabic-speaking families face cultural competency challenges such as accessing resources, engaging with the local population, or reading their new cultural context, and may require support with English, schoolwork, job/college applications, and cultural orientation. Jiran facilitates students and families learning from each others' linguistic and cultural knowledge.
Jiran programming is accessible for free to the families and community members who wish to participate. Donations go towards food, transportation, field trips, and community events.
