Our events are dedicated to celebrating the life of Julia Rusinek and honoring the ideals for which she lived. Julia was a student at Yale and devoted herself to improving the lives of those in need. As a college student at Yale University, she dedicated her summers and her free time to working with or on behalf of underprivileged children.
The mission of the Julia Rusinek Memorial Fund is to support children through programming aimed at developing leadership skills, a love of literature and writing, and dedication to athleticism.
Our event proceeds benefit LEAP, an important partner with the New Haven school system.
After a two-year hiatus due to COVID we are excited to bring our events back to you and the children it benefits.
Our new location is the beautiful and peaceful Edgewood Park, just off Whalley Ave in the Westville section of New Haven. This scenic park has a rich history! It was designed in 1910 by Frederick Law Olmstead who also designed Central Park in NYC as well as many others in CT and beyond.
Our 5k timed run and two-mile untimed walk courses will stay within the park on its roads. It will travel by West River and the ponds within its borders!
5k Course map - https://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=7652525 please enlarge to view it more easily. The course starts and ends near the pavilion at the park. To start it travels out on the park road a bit over a mile. It returns to a turnaround point at approximately 1.1mi, goes back out for .5mi, and returns .5 mi to cover the 3.11mi distance.
The Two-mile walk starts with the run and finishes upon the first return to the start area.
Our 5k distance is computer timed which you can run or walk. Participants are eligible for awards.
Our NEW, two-mile untimed walk. is designed for all ages. There are no awards for this distance.
The free kids' run will be untimed and cover 1/4 mile or less. We are encouraging 10-year-olds and younger. Parents/guardians can accompany their children. All children finishing will receive a medal! We will run a shorter and longer distance if the age ranges warrant it. We want every age to have fun!
All abilities are welcome and encouraged to join us in our three events!
NEW INFO FOR EVENT WEEKEND
THE KIDS RUN(S)- With many more older participants (11-16+) registered we will be having two kids runs.
The first one will be a short distance- about 100 yards- for those youngsters that feel best at that distance.
The second run will follow immediately after. It will be about 1/2 mile+ which we would recommend for middle school & up.
All abilities are welcome of course, and kids can run both if they want.
WHEN YOU ARE DONE WITH YOUR EVENT- Snacks, granola bars, fruit and fluids will be available.
AWARDS- Trophies and SoundRunner gift cards will be given to the top finishers in the 5k. PLEASE stay for your
awards- we cannot mail them! We will try our best to start the awards by 10:40am.
There are no awards for two mile walk.
All Kids run finishers will receive a medal.
DIRECTIONS/PARKING- Edgewood Park is a wonderful venue and also used by the public. There is tennis, basketball,
a dog park and skate park open to the public and busy on weekends. Do your best to be on the early side for parking in
the lot (holds about 60 cars). After that it is all on street.
The best lot to use is off West Rocks Ave. The Front lot, off Whalley Ave, will be CLOSED.
GPS/GOOGLE MAP- You can use MANJARES 382 West Rock Ave. New Haven (a great coffee shop/restaurant) as an
address. The parking lot entrance is right across the street at the park. You can also park on W. Rock Ave. If there are no spots
left you can cross Whalley Ave and go up Fitch St - less than a 1/4 mile north is a huge lot on the left, open to the public.
If you use Edgewood Park Skate Park in your GPS it will also get you there- but bring you to the front lot which would be closed.
DO NOT use (just) Edgewood Park because it could direct you to Edgewood Ave...
IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD- Looking to stay for a bit? Besides Manjares there are some terrific places just a short walk away.
You will love Bellas Cafe on Whalley Ave., and just North of that is the Cat Cafe and Pistachios.
The Rusinek Family and LEAP thank you for joining us in remembering Julia.
