Adding "Tomorrows" with Help from the Energy Industry
Over a decade ago, Coastal Flow began partnering with many of our energy industry partners and other Houston-area businesses to raise both awareness and funds to help fight cystic fibrosis (CF), an inherited life-threatening disease that affects approximately 30,000 people in the United States alone. The original support group that we joined sponsored the Cast for the Cure, an annual event which has raised over $2.3 million for the Gulf Coast Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF). True to the CFF’s motto, these funds have been vital for "adding tomorrows for people with the disease."
Cystic fibrosis is a rare genetic disease that progressively limits the ability to breathe. In the early 1950s, most children who were born with cystic fibrosis did not live long enough to begin elementary school. To combat this condition, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation was founded in 1955 by parents desperate to save their children’s lives. Their impassioned determination has resulted in tremendous strides over the past 60+ years in developing better treatments and improved quality of life for people with CF.
Today the predicted survival age for those with CF is over 40 years, and due to the extensive advancements in research and care, many people with CF are living long enough to realize their dreams of attending college, pursuing careers, getting married, and having kids. While there has been significant progress in treating this disease, there is still no cure and too many lives are cut far too short.
