The Goal: The goal is to run 1,000 virtual miles and raise $5,000 ($5 per mile) for Doctors Without Borders.

Why Doctors Without Borders: Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an independent international medical humanitarian organization that provides aid to people in more than 70 countries. MSF teams are responding to the COVID-19 pandemic on all fronts. They are caring for patients; offering health education and mental health support; and strengthening infection prevention and control measures in health facilities to slow the spread of the new coronavirus.

Why I'm Running Every Day: This started on May 27, 2019 as a one year challenge to run AT LEAST one mile per day (verified by Garmin GPS data). The last time I did a "one year challenge," I ran with it (no pun intended) and became a strict vegetarian for five years. It’s taken a lot of discipline to run at least one mile every day.

My Most Memorable Daily Runs:

  • June 27, 2019 @ Home: After gorging on happy hour tacos and tequilas with friends, I realized I still had to run my mile. With that feel-good tequila buzz, I started my run at 8:00pm in the middle of a downpour, and nailed a 7:42 minutes per mile pace around my neighborhood. I rewarded myself with yet another margarita at home.

  • September 26, 2019 @ Milan Airport: I woke up at 6:00am before my flight home, looked out the airport hotel window at the rental car parking lot across the street, and declared “I’m going to run my one mile there.” I got a lot of strange looks from the airport rental car customers, and rewarded myself with mimosas on the flight home.

  • January 20, 2020 @ Stowe, VT: After skiing 16 runs and 20,000 feet of elevation, I still had to get my basic mile in! I was exhausted and had to pull on my cold weather running gear, and ran my one mile (in the dark) at the Trapp Family Lodge before enjoying a well deserved Vermont beer! Are you seeing a pattern?

Please join me for my 370th consecutive run, and let’s raise money for Doctors Without Borders!

Cheers,

About Doctors Without Borders

Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an independent medical humanitarian organization that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, malnutrition, natural disasters, and exclusion from health care, withoutregard to race, religion, or political affiliation.

On any given day, in over 72 countries, more than 45,200 individuals representing dozens of nationalities assist people caught in crises around the world. They are doctors, nurses, logistics experts, administrators, epidemiologists, laboratory technicians, mental health professionals, and others whose work is guided by humanitarian principles and medical ethics. MSF medical teams conduct evaluations on the ground to determine a population's medical needs before opening programs, aiming to fill existing gaps (rather than replicating services that are already offered) or reach neglected communities.

Over the years, the organization has been the recipient of several awards that recognize its work, including the 1998 Conrad N. Hilton Humanitarian Prize, the 1999 Nobel Peace Prize, the 2012 J. William Fulbright Prize for International Understanding, the 2015 Lasker-Bloomberg Public Service Award, and the 2017 Pardes Humanitarian Prize for Mental Health.
