Now in its 5th year, the Fall in Love 10K and 5K Run & Walk to benefit Special Love is a great way to support Mid-Atlantic children with cancer and their families, all while enjoying a scenic run (or walk) along the C&O Canal Towpath.
Please note: the t-shirt ordering deadline was September 13 -- it has now passed! Those who did not register prior to the deadline will not be guaranteed a shirt at packet pick-up. Extra shirts/sizes will be available on a first-come first-served basis.
Special Love sponsors retreats, like the week-long Camp Fantastic, that give young cancer patients and their families the chance to get out of the hospital to enjoy traditional camp activities and a community of support made up of people who understand what they’re going through. Special Love also provides financial assistance in the form of emergency relief and college scholarships.
Want to be a hero? Earn your cape!* Join our FIL5K10K Fundraising Team by visiting our CrowdRise page and clicking on the gray button at the lower right ("Fundraise for this campaign"). Your pledges from friends and family will help us serve even more kids with cancer and their families.
* Yes, there will be capes! Race participants who fundraise through CrowdRise will automatically receive a cape to wear during the race! Participants can also choose to add a cape to their registration for an additional $20. (CrowdRise fundraisers DO NOT need to add a cape at registration!)
Thank you for your support!
PARTICIPANTS ARE WELCOME TO PICK UP PACKETS FOR FRIENDS AND FAMILY AT OUR EVENTS! Individuals who wish to pick up packets for an entire team or larger group -- please contact our race director ahead of time so that we can gather your materials in advance and cut down on your wait time.
Race-day packet pick up will also be available, but limited -- participants are urged to pick up their packets in advance, if possible!
Both the 5k and 10k will be out-and-back on the C&O Canal Towpath, with the start and finish lines near the Whitehurst Freeway. The 10k course is not two loops of the 5k course -- participants running/walking the 5k will go out 1.55 miles and back 1.55 miles, and participants running the 10k will go out 3.1 miles and back 3.1 miles. Volunteers will be stationed on the course to direct participants at the appropriate turnaround points.
Race Day Timeline:
9:15am – Participants assemble near the race start area on the C & O Towpath, near the Whitehurst Freeway (see more information on how to get to the start, below).
As mentioned above, race-day packet pickup will be available, but limited. Bag check will be available in the start/finish area, but participants are requested to not leave valuables in their checked bags -- the area will be monitored throughout the race, but Special Love and Federal City Runners will not be responsible for lost or stolen items.
10am – 10k Race Start!
10:15am – 5k Race Start!
Runners/walkers will depart in self-selected waves by pace, to avoid crowding. While on the course, please be respectful of other trail users!
Following the race, an awards ceremony will be held, with prizes for overall winners in both the 5k and 10k races. Raffle prizes will also be available for all participants -- for raffle prizes, participants must be present to win!
The race start/finish area is located on the C&O Canal Towpath, and is accessible via sets of stairs from both sides of the Canal at 34th Street, as well as via a narrower stairway at the very end of Water Street. Those accessing the Towpath from the 34th Street stairs will need to walk along the Canal and pass underneath the Key Bridge to reach the race. Signs will be posted to direct you!
