Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune

 May is International Victorious Woman Month and we celebrate the great Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune. If there was any woman that had the whole world against her; it was Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune.  But, despite it all, her accomplishments could cover 2 lifetimes!

Mary Jane McLeod Bethune was born on July 10, 1875, she was an educator, philanthropist, humanitarian, strategist, communicator, and womanist. Dr. Bethune founded the National Council of Negro Women in 1935.  She presided as president over a myriad of Negro/African women's organizations.  

She was also appointed National advisor to President Franklin D. Roosevelt.  She also created the Federal Council of Colored Affairs also known as the Black Cabinet. 

Her notoriety was first accomplished when she starts the Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach Florida.

A statue of this civil rights pioneer replaced a general, making her the first Black American with direct lineage to enslaved Africans.  Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune represents the great state of Florida.

The NCNW has joined forces with the United Nations (UN) and African Renaissance Diaspora Network (ARDN) Red Card Pledge.  The Red Card Pledge
is the commitment of the United Nations and ARDN to achieving its United Nations Sustainable Development Goal #5 – Achieve Gender Equality and Empower All Women and Girls.
