Description

Join us for the 2nd annual Mimosas for Marrow 5K!

We are two local moms, Sam and Brittany, teaming up with Fusion Racing for the purpose of raising funds toward NMDP - formally known as the National Marrow Donor Program and Be The Match.

NMDP is a nonprofit organization dedicated to connecting patients with a matching donor for a life-saving stem cell (bone marrow) transplant. And one that resonates so deeply, as it saved Sam’s 4 year old daughter, Oakley, in 2022.

Every 3-4 minutes, someone in the U.S. is diagnosed with a blood cancer such as leukemia or lymphoma, as well as a blood disorder such as sickle cell or severe aplastic anemia. Many times the only cure for patients facing these critical medical conditions is to find a matching donor as quickly as possible.

Through Oakley’s journey, we were inspired to raise awareness, and educate the community on becoming a bone marrow donor through NMDP - providing an opportunity to potentially save a life, just like Oakley’s.

Interested in becoming a donor today? Simply text OakleysOhana to 61474 to register, or see us on race day where we will have a table set up!

Last year 498 of you came out in an effort to raise funds for those affected by blood cancers/disorders, and incredibly enough we were able to raise over $16,000! We are beyond thrilled to see what is in store for this year.

Come out to support and track some miles, while enjoying some bubbly mimosas after!

Oakley’s Story

On December 22nd, 2021, Oakley, a previously healthy 2 year old, was diagnosed with a rare, life-threatening blood disorder called Severe Aplastic Anemia, resulting in bone marrow failure. In short, her bone marrow stopped producing enough blood cells, leaving her with dangerously low red/white blood cells and platelets. Oakley had been fighting for her life while receiving roughly 70 blood/platelet transfusions, and immunotherapy that unfortunately didn’t work. Her only chance at survival was a bone marrow transplant, requiring a conditioning regimen of immunosuppression, chemotherapy, and radiation.
With relief, her transplant team found Oakley a close matched bone marrow donor who had registered on Be The Match. This person selflessly signed up, and donated her healthy stem cells with the hopes of giving a stranger a second chance at life - and that person happened to be Oakley.
After a vigorous 7 week stay in the hospital receiving her life-saving transplant, Oakley’s family were given the news that her transplant was successful.
Oakley’s experience has been anything but ordinary - spending nearly 4 months total inpatient. She has had to endure jaundice/liver toxicity, an invasive infection, several surgeries, intubation, multiple flare-ups of GVHD - a condition that occurs when donor bone marrow attack the recipient, a blood infection, mucocitis, and more. Though this journey presented many days/nights of challenges, Oakley’s strength and courage showed that she is a true super hero. Despite her rollercoaster recovery, she is finally able to start living life as a kid again.
