Description

Yorklyn Monster 5K

Legend has it, a very long time ago, the area that is now known as the village of Yorklyn, DE, a break-off faction of Inuit people from far northern Canada settled here.  On their first day after making camp they discovered an unusually large salamander in the Red Clay Creek.  This 3-foot long creature seemed at first unconcerned with its new human neighbors, even becoming sort of a pet to the people.  But, as the legend tells, after several sunrises this small tribe began shrinking.  Soon there were only two remaining.  At the same time of these disappearances, the large salamander tripled in size!  The people, now fearful that their once loving salamander had become so large and unapproachable, were preparing to flee Yorklyn.  The amphibian could sense this fear....  No one knows what really happened to these rogue Inuits, but the legend continues when some traveling Quakers from Philadelphia were visiting Israel Marshall at the mansion in Yorklyn.  Strolling the grounds behind the mansion they encountered what is referred to today as the Yorklyn Monster!   From an unconfirmed interview with an anonymous staff member from the mansion who was working in the yard, not far from where the travelers were last seen, he heard terrifying screams and a sound he claimed to be like a "gurgling steam engine crashing into another gurgling steam engine," then silence.  As he was running towards these horrifying sounds by the time he got to where is now the Auburn Heights loop off Farm Lane, he saw what he declared, "a Salamonster running over the hill."  Hence that loop in Auburn Heights off Farm lane is today acknowledged as the Yorklyn Monster Loop.
