Freshwater Land Trust is a local nonprofit that works to protect Central Alabama’s natural resources and connect communities within Jefferson County to trails and greenspaces. This year, it celebrates its 30th founding anniversary! In the last 30 years, FLT has protected critical habitats and waterways with the conservation of over 12,500 acres of land across 14 counties. It has also improved access to non-motorized recreation and transportation with the development of 175 miles of trails, parks, and bike lanes here in Jefferson County.

FLT's current goals include:

  • Completion of the Red Rock Action Plan: a 36-mile trail loop around the greater Birmingham metro, linking 6 cities and our 3 main greenspaces, Railroad Park, Red Mountain Park, and Ruffner Mountain Nature Preserve.
  • Opening of new publicly accessible properties: securing more conservation properties for public access, creating unique recreational spaces cared for by FLT.
