Running for Rick 5k

Donation Goal: $3,500

In the United States, thousands of 5ks are hosted each year with the same goal of raising money for various charities. Whether a local or national organization, the reason 5ks are such a popular choice for fundraising is for one simple reason: They work. Not only do 5ks attract many donations, but they also bring the community together in the spirit of hard work and determination.  A group of people, all inspired by the same cause, working together in order to raise money is a testament to the strength of a community. No community is stronger than the one we’re a part of in North Alabama.

Moreover, no one is more devoted to their community than Rick Doke. For over 20 years, Coach Doke has taught thousands of students and trained just as many runners. His passion for running and teaching is evident in his commitment to both his students and athletes. I remember in 7th grade when I hesitantly trekked out to the Point Mallard Trails on a cool summer morning, Coach Doke immediately introduced me to an older runner who showed me the ropes on my first day. After that first practice, Coach Doke sat down with all the new runners and talked to each of us about our goals and what we were hoping to get out of Cross Country. For Coach Doke, running wasn’t about how many medals or trophies you could win – it was about how much you could improve each season in order to reach your final goal of becoming the best version of yourself.

Therefore, last year, when Coach Doke was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, the senior runners and I knew we had to take action. We created the Running for Rick 5k, in order to help fund the fight against Parkinson’s Disease.  The inaugural race will be held May 20, 2023. Coach Doke’s impact on my life pushes me to be a better member of my community and to help those who need it most. With your generous donation, we will be able to contribute to funding Parkinson’s research through the Michael J. Fox Foundation, and help give back to someone who has done so much good for his community. Any amount helps, and we would also appreciate contributions in the form of food, drink, or other miscellaneous supplies for the race. Your support will directly help train the next generation of specialists, fund large clinical trials, and support various therapeutic programs for those affected by this terrible disease.

According to the Parkinson’s Foundation, over 10 million people worldwide suffer from Parkinson’s disease. In the United States alone, approximately 1 million people live with Parkinson’s, with 90,000 more cases diagnosed each year. Currently, there is no known cure for Parkinson’s. In honor of a man who has done so much to help his community, please help us fight Parkinson's disease in any way you can.
