In conjunction with Arbor Day 2021, participants can sign up for a virtual 5K or 10K and have one week to complete their mileage via walking, running or hiking.
SJEI’s decision to host a virtual event supports the CDC’s current social distancing guidelines and recommendations. This also means, people from all over the world can participate!
When is the event?
Saturday, April 24th-Friday, April 30 (Arbor Day)
Will the event be timed?
This will be an untimed 5K/10K walk, run, or hike event. All fitness levels are welcome!
What do I get?
Participants who register will be mailed a race bib and tree sapling for planting.
Donations:
Money raised from this event will support SJEI’s Education Outreach Program and Residential Greywater Systems as well as administration and operating costs:
Education Outreach Program
SJEI’s Education Outreach program aims to spread awareness of ethical engineering practices, environmental justice, and social justice to middle school students in Arizona. This will be accomplished by planning, creating, and distributing a four-lesson curriculum that will engage students actively in exploring the importance of social and environmental justice in engineering practices.
Low Cost Residential Greywater Systems
Our goal for this year will be to complete a low cost household greywater system, starting out local (Arizona) and expanding after proof of concept and design has been completed. By doing so we can design and install graywater systems on homes throughout Phoenix and the world at a low cost, eliminating upwards of 50% of what would otherwise be black water and reusing the water outdoors instead of using even more clean water outside.
Prizes:
1. Highest total giving - 25,000 Alaska Airlines miles
2. Overnight stay for 2 at the Arizona Enchantment Resort
3. An annual U.S. Parks Pass - Grand Canyon, Yosemite, Arches, Zion
A virtual prize drawing will take place via SJEI’s Facebook Live https://www.facebook.com/TheSJEI
following the last day of the event.
