About Imagining More Foundation:
It has been a long-time dream and vision for Shannon to empower youth through sport. Her story below explains why:
"I co-founded our non-profit, “Imagining More Foundation” (IMF) in 2012 with the goal of expanding the narrative about what it means to be an athlete. My vision was to create a platform that would reach multi-cultural and underserved student athletes. I wanted to include more points of view (gender, nationality, race, ethnicity). I wanted coaches and athletes from the professional and local running communities to share their own stories in their own words about how sport has had such a positive and profound impact on their lives. I wanted these stories to encourage and empower our young student athletes to create their own narrative about how participating in sport can help them become future leaders.
As my 15-year professional running career winds down, it is now time to give back to the academic and athletic community that has given so much to me. It is my strong belief (founded by personal life experiences) that diligent work in the high school classroom and on the field of play can lead to incredible collegiate opportunities which, in turn, can ultimately pave the way to becoming successful leaders. I realized that there is a lack of knowledge available to our youth and their families about how sport can open so many unimaginable opportunities for aspiring high school student athletes. Our dream turned into reality when we became the proud recipients of a prestigious US Department of State Grant in support of our Inaugural Empowerment Through Sport Camp which was held in San Francisco on August 6, 2022.
