The Norton Children’s Fund was established when Chester D. Norton, an Andover farmer, died in 1891. Local legend has it that when Chester was a child his family could not afford the eyeglasses he needed and a kindly gentleman provided the family with funds for Chester’s eyeglasses. Many years later when making his will, Chester remembered that single act of kindness and left money to support the children of Andover.
Only the interest income on the principal he left and private donations are expended each year. Funds are used to support Andover families with back-to-school items, clothes, school uniforms, holiday time assistance and yearly scholarship(s). The Commission depends greatly on the generosity of members of the community to help sustain services.
