VOLUSIA SURF LIFESAVING ASSOCIATION
The Volusia Surf Lifesaving Association (VSLA) is a nonprofit professional association of beach lifeguards and ocean water rescuers established in 1987. Members work to reduce the incidents of death and injury in the aquatic environment through public education, youth programs, national lifeguard standards, training programs, promotion of high levels of lifeguard readiness, and other means. The VSLA is a recognized chapter of the United States Lifesaving Association (USLA).
In an ongoing effort to promote physical fitness and preparedness among lifeguards, the VSLA hosts an interzone lifesaving competition every summer and has hosted numerous regional lifesaving competitions and four previous national championships. It also is the only association in the United States to host the World Lifesaving Championships held in Daytona Beach in 2002.
The mission of the VSLA is to establish and maintain high standards of professional surf lifesaving to maximize public safety through preventative awareness and education programs.
Last year we held a fundraiser for a lifeguard that was diagnosed with glioblastoma, a rare form of brain cancer that left him unable to work. For the last five years we have collected and donated toys for Christmas to the thousands of local children that are in foster care due to abuse or neglect.
