Cross Country A-Z
Cross Country is for everyone! Different than a trail run, cross country is run on fields and through woods, but more groomed and more room to run than a trail run. While your individual accomplishments are always important, the team aspect of cross country sets it apart and makes is special. Typically, 5 runners compose a scoring team and each runner is assigned points based on their finishing place. Low points wins, so a perfect score would be 15 points (1 point for first, 2 points for second etc.). In cross country, your 5th runner is as important as your 1st making it a true team sport lending special importance to the ‘middle of the packers’. To make things even more interesting, while a team’s 6th and 7th runner don’t contribute to their team score, they can ADD points to their competition’s team scores. For example, Team A has 2 great front runners but runner #5 is back in the pack, Team B has a tight group of 7, but no front runners. If Team B’s #6 and #7 place in front of any of team A’s top 5 it adds one place to the runners finish. This becomes very important in close races and is often the difference in team titles at Championship races.
In order to allow more teams to compete, we are modifying the number of runners that make-up a team to 3 members, following USATF’s women’s master’s guidelines. Each registered team will be assigned a ‘box’ at the starting line. There also will be plenty of unassigned boxes for open runners.
Cross country is a field leveler…tough enough to utilize a distance runner’s strength yet short enough that middle distance speed can be a factor.
