In 1977, a group of local pastors, frustrated by the high level of adult illiteracy in their communities, founded a grassroots program to teach people to read. Nearly 40 years later, that effort has evolved into YMCA Educational Services (YES!), the adult education and workforce development branch of the YMCA of Greater New Orleans.
In partnership with the New Orleans Public Library, YES! gives adults the math, reading, and computer skills they need to advance at work, assist their children at school, and be active, engaged citizens. We work with non-readers who want to function better in their daily lives, adults seeking a high school diploma, and workers who need to improve their math and reading skills to advance on the job.
