Soldiers are trained to fight – and to survive. Civilians politely earn our successes.  The stories that wounded heroes like Joshua andJames share are too often observed at arm’s length, if at all. We feel uncomfortable – bound by genuinely felt compassion for a wounded Hero’s struggle – appreciative of their sacrifice, but too often blind to the inspiration of the courage they must call on to reclaim civilian lives. At Holidays for Heroes, we want to participate in rebuilding their worlds.

It is our mission and our responsibility to honor their sacrifice, to reciprocate their commitment, and to participate in a fellowship with our soldiers that proclaims we are proudly American.
It takes a village: we bring our Hero’s families to an environment of relaxation and goodwill.  Every summer, H4H partners with Nantucket residents and businesses to host all-inclusive retreats for veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan. Each Nantucket Holiday Experience centers on a national patriotic holidays – Memorial Day, Independence Day and The American Dream Tribute & Gala – when we embrace each holiday together with Hero families the Nantucket way: parades & fireworks, fishing, sailing, clambakes, bike rides;  group dinners with island families and new friends and a tribute among this nation’s most ardent political leaders and visionaries.

Behind every hero there is a family who have loved, supported, and sacrificed. Holidays for Heroes seeks to repay each hero as a family unit. In so doing we fill a niche that is too often left unattended.

The American Dream is hard fought and hard won. Each Experience celebrates the national freedoms and family values Americans hold most sacred. There are plenty of activities for the kids, and appropriate handicap or medical support as needed. This island-wide shared experience is exactly what every American soldier sacrificed for. It’s a Hero’s welcome, and our goal is fundamental: bridge our world with theirs, and embrace a fraternity with our brothers and sisters that is positively transformative.

Reaching far beyond our Hero families’ acute need for some heavy duty R&R, American Dream grants, awards and scholarships guarantee our Heroes will have the chance – and the resources – to personally live the lives they fought for.

Each grant offers a hand up, not a hand out. American Dream Awards further education & training, or small business start ups for Heroes trying to build a future.  Grants for homestead handicap retrofits or down payments for a place to live relieve the pressures of providing a home for family, so a hero can focus on building his/her future.

We can’t do it alone. Even the smallest commitment of your time and energy can have exponential consequences – personal consequences – in the lives of wounded heroes.  The HFH producing team with thousands of Nantucket volunteers and supporters have come to know true heroism first hand. And we get to demonstrate our thanks. It’s fundamental. In connecting with these soldiers we join them, to profoundly characterize the American spirit.
