The Exceptional Children’s Program at Rocky Mount Academy consists of twenty-five students and seven teachers. Students within the program have moderate to severe intellectual disabilities such as autism and Down syndrome. Students work daily during both group and individual instruction to strengthen their skills and to achieve their learning goals. Although classroom instruction is very important, many skills cannot be learned without hands-on experiences both in and out of the classroom. Time beyond the gates of Rocky Mount Academy helps the students practice their social skills. Here are some examples of the learning experiences and adventures that develop the students’ social and life skills:
- Grocery Shopping
- Cooking
- Delivery of Meals on Wheels
- Swimming at the YMCA
- Sensory Gyms
- Field Trips to the Zoo
- Sylvan Heights Bird Park
- Jockey’s Ridge
- Dolphin Watching Tours
- Train Rides
- Discovery Cove Swim with the Dolphins
- Disney Park Adventures
- Participation in Annual Theatre Performance
Money raised will be used to enhance these hands-on experiences. Thank you for your generosity and support towards the Exceptional Eagles Program at Rocky Mount Academy!
