Rainbow Kidz (RK) is the pediatric grief support program of Hospice & Palliative Care of Iredell County. Our mission is to help children and families cope with illness and grief by providing extraordinary care and support at home, in schools, and throughout our community.

Rainbow Kidz was developed in 2005 at the request of school counselors. RK grief groups teach students how to cope with the loss of a loved one and give them tools to deal with future crises. Additional programming includes two weeks of summer camp and summer groups at the Boys & Girls Club and Statesville YMCA. RK also offers one-on-one grief counseling for children, crisis response, support for infant loss; specialized care for children undergoing palliative/hospice care; and resources to help parents communicate with children regarding grief.

In 2022, more than 500 children were served by Rainbow Kidz. There is never a cost for Rainbow Kidz services.

In 2022, more than 500 children received services through this invaluable program. Children learn the healthy coping skills they need to honor the memory of their loved one and be successful throughout their lives. These children are dealing with tragic and sudden losses and more than 50% of the time, a loss of a parent or sibling. 

The program provides grief groups in Iredell County schools, one-one-one individual counseling for more complicated needs, summer grief camps, grief support groups at the Boys & Girls Club of the Piedmont and the Statesville Family YMCA, as well as support during crisis situations, pre-bereavement support for families dealing with impending death and infant loss. 

There is never a cost to families or the school system for these services, so fundraising is extremely important.
