We are the Independence Township Volunteer Fire Department. We serve Independence township as well as assist in mutual aid with our surrounding municipalities. The ITVFD was started in 1944 when some members of the growing rural farming community recognized the need for a formal fire department. While formed in 1944 the ITVFD moved into their first firehouse 1947 along Rt. 46 next to the central school. The original fire house was built by the original firemen. Throughout the years as the community grew so did the needs and the fire department. More apparatus was needed and attained. This created the need for a larger department to house all the apparatus and equipment. A new fire house was built and moved into in 2011. The ITVFD is a completely volunteer fire department, with approximately 25-30 active members. All members give up countless hours to serve the community. Most people do not understand everything involved as members. while our #1 priority has been and will always be the safety of our community through fire extinguishment and prevention, so much more is part of the department. We assist in fire and carbon monoxide detections, motor vehicle accidents, lift assists, other medical issues, flooding,Basement flooding, broken pipes, down trees on wires, broken power poles as well as covering landing zones for medevac helicopters and more. Fire departments get called for virtually almost anything ! Fire departments have exorbitant costs. Average fire apparatus purchase costs range in the one to two million dollars. A fire fighter entering a burning structure requires approximately $15,000. worth of safety “turn out” gear. As we do receive some monetary assistance from the township committee, we rely largely on fundraising, some of our fund raising events are, Bingo nights, Line Dancing nights, Fill the Boot” street donations Breakfasts and Hall rentals, and We also rely on monetary donations for support.
