Back in January 2017, Jane and I thought that month was the worst month we could have ever lived. That month was the month we found that our son Jacob was self-medicating with different drugs to help cope with his depression and anxiety, uncomfortable is some social situations, and just trying to fit in. Though, we thought at that time we would take him to rehab, and he would be fixed, going on enjoying life as we once knew it. We soon discovered that, that is usually not the case. Jacob had struggled with this demon for 4 years, having highs and lows; with victories along the way. He fought it hard 24 hours a day, seven days of the week. This is the norm for recovering addicts. Yes, it is very hard to understand looking from the outside in, especially if you do not have the addiction brain. Some will probably never understand, just know that for most addicts they too don’t understand why them. It is a parent’s worst nightmare, this disease, wondering what we did, what is wrong with our child, but the more you talk the more open people become and you realize that this is a disease called mental health, and its real.
Fast forward to August 20, 2021, this was Janes’ and mine worst day of our lives. This is the day that Jacob passed away from an accidental overdose, though at times very much and still is a blur. One thing we realized how much community support was given to us. At the time we thought what we do to best memorial our son Jacob. Do we do sober living, do we do donations to rehabs to help others, do we do scholarships for other recovering addicts that are trying to get their life on track. We pondered these over months, not knowing what the best fit was and hoping those that donated are not thinking we are keeping the dollars that were given in Jake’s memory.
Back in early 2021, Jacob decided he needed a four-legged companion. He searched and found that he wanted a Miniature Australian Shepherd. It was at that time he found his beloved Cooper. The two were inseparable, Jacob taking him to work with him at the funeral home, with Cooper becoming a friend to many of the families we serve, and being requested…where’s Cooper? After Jacob’s death, Cooper became Jane and my dog, still taking him to the funeral home, Cooper adjusted well after Jacobs’s death. One evening I was taking Copper to the Middle Grounds Dog Park for some exercise and to meet his other canine buddies only to find it was closed. Then we proceeded to the Oregon Rec, only to find the big blue sign as you enter, “NO PETS ALLOWED”. Well, the rebel in me said “Go anyways”, and there we went. No one was there, and I let Cooper off his leash. While he was running, looking back to see if I was still there, it was like a bolt of lightning, thinking to myself, “Oregon does not have a dog park and that is what Jacob would want.” jakeandcoopersbarkpark.com
