PHYSICAL MOVEMENT & MENTAL HEALTH
According to the National Institutes of Health, exercise and physical movement improve mental health by reducing anxiety, depression, and negative moods, and by improving self-esteem and cognitive function. Exercise has also been found to alleviate symptoms such as low self-esteem and social withdrawal, and provide benefits that include improved sleep, stress relief, improvement in mood, and reduced tiredness that can increase mental alertness. Thirty minutes of exercise of moderate intensity is sufficient for these benefits— and those 30 minutes don’t need to happen all at once! Three 10-minute sessions of physical movement are believed to be as equally useful as one 30-minute session.

ABOUT MINDING YOUR MIND
Minding Your Mind is a leading provider of school-based and community-wide mental health education programs. Our mission is to eliminate the stigma surrounding mental health issues and to promote help-seeking behavior in those who may be suffering. The COVID-19 crisis has had a dramatic impact on mental health, especially among teens and young adults. In the CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report of August 14, 2020, it showed that 25.5% of respondents aged 18-24 seriously considered suicide in the past month. A survey conducted in May 2020 by Harris Poll for the National 4-H Council had these key takeaways:
- 7 in 10 teens have experienced struggles with mental health during the COVID-19 crisis
- 55% of teens say they’ve experienced anxiety, 45% excessive stress, and 43% depression
- 82% of teens are calling on America to talk more openly and honestly about mental health issues in this country
- 79% of teens surveyed wish there was an inclusive environment or safe space for people in school to talk about mental health
Students are telling us that they need Minding Your Mind, and you can help us deliver it to them! This year we are offering live-streamed and recorded presentations that will temporarily replace, and ultimately enhance, in-person presentations. Our new educational platform, Minding Your Mind: ONLINE offers schools the opportunity to access supplementary mental health education materials including interactive exercises, activities, worksheets, and to address these issues and needs on an ongoing basis throughout the school year. Your participation in Move for Your Mind will help fund these programs for schools all around the country. LET'S DO THIS!
