Description

K9 Moro passed away in his sleep, at his home, sometime over the night on July 31st, 2017. He was 12 1/2 years old. K9 Moro had been unofficially retired since June 2016. He had been living with his K9 handler Officer John J. Hennessy and Officer Hennessy's family since 2006. K9 Moro was purchased by Ideal Police Canine on behalf of the Towanda Borough Police Department on May 24th, 2006. He started his training in May of 2006. He was born in Poland. He was trained by Ideal Police Canine. His trainers were Roger Stipcak and Larry Wilcox. He was trained in patrol, narcotics detection and tracking. He started working full-time in October 2006 with Officer Hennessy. K9 Moro loved working. He loved meeting new people and always wanted to interact with kids. From 2006 to 2014, he patrolled the streets with Officer Hennessy. During those years, K9 Moro and Officer Hennessy conducted numerous narcotics searches of vehicles, houses and schools. K9 Moro and Officer Hennessy worked with many Bradford County Law Enforcement agencies as they were the only active Municipal Police K9 team in Bradford County. In 2014, Officer Hennessy and K9 Moro became the School Resource Officers for the Towanda Area School District. K9 Moro loved going to the schools. He ran the halls, went in classrooms and interacted with anybody that he could! During the many years of service, K9 Moro and Officer Hennessy participated in many community relations services which included walking in Fourth of July parades and Christmas parades. They put on many demonstrations for the public at libraries and special events. They put on presentations for the Kindergarten classes at Towanda as well as some 4th grade classes at Northeast Bradford. K9 Moro was calm but strong. He didn't bark or growl alot but would protect his handler, his fellow officers and the public without question! He will truly be missed! The Towanda Police K9 Unit will continue as K9 Edo is still active and loves to work!

Half of the money raised from this 5K will go to the Towanda Borough Police Department K9 unit to help purchase a new K9 patrol vehicle in the future. The current K9 patrol vehicle is a 2009 Chevy Trailblazer with 125,000 miles on it. The other half of the money raised will go toward the Towanda Borough Police K9 unit's "operation blue Santa" project which helps families and or children in need at Christmas time.

The route of the 5k is on the side streets of the First and Second Wards of Towanda Borough. Similar to the ARCC/YMCA Shamrock Run. Registration and the start of the race will take place at the pavilion by Remsnyder Ball Field.

Registration for the 5k begins at 9a with the race beginning at 10a.

The Towanda Borough Police K9 Unit is the only Municipal Police K9 Unit in Bradford County.
