This spring, Global Medical Brigades at Penn State will be traveling to Belize to assist local doctors in providing free healthcare to members of rural and isolated communities. Without this care, many community members who live with chronic and severe conditions, such as diabetes and asthma, would be unable to access necessary treatment. Global brigades recognizes that healthcare does not only include treatments and diagnoses for current and pre-existing medical problems, but needs to include preventative measures as well. This is why we use a holistic healthcare model to identify and address each community’s specific health needs. When community leaders first contact Global Medical Brigades for assistance, their first need is often healthcare. However, Global Medical Brigades also works with our communities to develop infrastructure such as clean water systems and eco stoves to reduce cases of preventable diseases. Our goal is for our communities to one day no longer need our assistance.
Global Medical Brigades also strongly believes that in order to assist communities abroad, we must also assist our own. Penn State’s chapter of Global Medical Brigades volunteers with several community organizations such as Housing Transitions, Out of the Cold, the YMCA, the Student Farm, and the Jared Box Project to provide food, healthcare, essential materials, and hope to neighbors and community members in need.
Our goal is to raise $5000 to assist our communities abroad and at home. With your donations, we truly believe we can reach this goal, and we are ever so grateful for any amount you can provide.
