HISTORY
OF THE COASTAL DISCOVERY MUSEUM
Founded in 1985, the Coastal Discovery Museum operated at two previous locations before making made a giant leap forward in the Fall 2007 when it opened the facility at Honey Horn – a “Town of Hilton Head Island” property that’s home to several of Hilton Head Island’s oldest certified buildings. Since relocating, the Museum has expanded its offerings, doubled the number of students in education programs, and hosted dozens of special events and festivals annually.
In 2015 the Coastal Discovery Museum was officially recognized as a Smithsonian Affiliate joining 200 institutions around the country. Building on this recognition, Museum staff and board members have conducted strategic planning operations in recent years to establish and direct what will be the Coastal Discovery Museum’s impact, activities, and goals for the projected future, and measures to assure its ongoing presence in the Hilton Head community.
The Coastal Discovery Museum's mission is to provide experiences that inspire people to care for the Lowcountry. Our commitment to protect and preserve the Lowcountry's diverse wildlife, history, art and culture is woven throughout our programs, exhibitions, workshops and events.
