Description
Simple, we run on MLK Day so our campers at Barefoot Republic Camp can keep attending camp. All money raised during the 5K 4 MLK goes straight into our scholarship fund. Barefoot desires to see all races, cultures & socioeconomic groups be celebrated and come together in unity. Understanding the impact Martin Luther King Jr. had on calling for racial freedom, celebrating diversity and creating unity, Barefoot Republic wanted to host an event using these themes as the ground work for bringing people together. Knowing the large running and exercise community that exists in Nashville, this is a great fit.
On August 28th 1963, Martin Luther King Jr. gave what would be one of the most prolific speeches on the last century which called for the end of racism in America. Delivered in front of thousands of civil rights supporters, it became a defining moment in the American Civil Rights Movement. In the speech, King proclaimed:
"Now is the time to lift our nation from the quicksands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood. Now is the time to make justice a reality for all of God's children."
"I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: 'We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.' These proclamations still applies today."
"I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."
Join the cause. Take a stand for unity. Run for diversity. Join us in Nashville on January 15th, 2018. You can make a difference.
