On November 2, 2024, the Tellico Plains community lost an extraordinary young woman, Darrah Wiseman. At just 17, Darrah’s life was tragically cut short in a car accident. She was more than a high school senior—Darrah was a six-time Tennessee State Champion in track, a trailblazer, and a beacon of inspiration. She dominated the 800m (three-time champion), 1600m (two-time champion), and 3200m (one-time champion), and she had her sights set on more championships in 2025 before embarking on her collegiate running career at Tennessee Tech.
Darrah’s passion for running and relentless drive were unmatched. Despite having no track at her school—or anywhere in Monroe County—she trained with unwavering determination. Darrah would travel 30 miles one way to practice on a track, or even over an hour to Knoxville to refine her technique with trainers. Rain or shine, she never missed a run, driven by her commitment to her craft and a vision for her future. She inspired everyone around her, not just with her accomplishments but with her work ethic, kindness, and the words of encouragement she often wrote to herself to stay motivated.
Darrah’s impact extended far beyond the finish line. She was a role model for younger runners, a cherished member of the running community, and a shining example of what dedication can achieve, even in the face of challenges. Her love for running was contagious—she participated in local 5Ks and served as the grand marshal for the Cherohala Skyway 5K, spreading her joy for the sport wherever she went.
To honor Darrah’s memory and her incredible legacy, her family and community is working to build a track at Tellico Plains High School. This track will not only commemorate the life of the most decorated athlete in the school’s history but will also serve as a source of inspiration for future generations of runners in Monroe County. With a proper facility, young athletes will have the opportunity to dream big, train hard, and follow in Darrah’s footsteps.
