Description

5K For Flint is taking place on September 23 at Midlothian High School. Hope to see you there!

The Midlothian High School PTSO is proud to announce the fifth annual Midlothian High School 5K Run to be held on Saturday, September 23.  This event, held on the school grounds, has been a huge success in previous years and has been a positive experience for our school and community.   This year’s run will be the celebration of a combined effort between the PTSO and Midlothian High School to raise awareness and provide immediate relief for the ongoing water crisis in Flint, Michigan. For over three years, residents of Flint have been unable to use their tap water due to the toxic levels of lead, and have been forced to use bottled water for everything from cooking to bathing.

5k For Flint is a non-competitive fun run in which participants of all ages run or walk a course that winds around the grounds of Midlothian High School. The purpose of the 5K is to raise awareness and provide immediate relief for the water crisis in Flint, Michigan. Residents of Flint, Michigan have been poisoned by toxic, lead poisoned water for over three years. On April 24, 2014, the government switched the city’s water source from Lake Huron to the historically dirty Flint River to save money. However, the acidic water of Flint River corroded the lead pipes of the city, and as a result, Flint’s tap water became contaminated with toxic levels of lead. To this day, Flint residents are forced to use bottled water for everything, from bathing to cooking.

This year, the PTSO has chosen The United Way of Genesee County Flint Water Fund to be the recipient of the funds raised. The foundation will use the money to provide adequate water filters, bottled water, and emergency support services for the residents of Flint.

Open to all ages and abilities- beginner friendly! Tickets purchased online before September 20th come with a free t-shirt. (Participants who sign up at the event will not be guaranteed a free shirt.) Interested in helping Flint even more? You can also donate money to Flint residents.

All race participants will automatically be placed in a raffle when they purchase their ticket. Three lucky winners will win a $100 Wegmans gift card! Prizes also include:

  • one free cup at Sweet Frog (6)
  • one $20 Carytown Bicycle Co. gift card (2)

With fun games, music, prizes, and food- come to support an important cause, and stay for a great time!
