About Lydia's Race

Lydia, a former Woodgrove High School, and Christopher Newport University cross country and track athlete, suffered a stroke on Saturday April 23, 2016. At the time she was competing in the Capital Athletic Conference Championship meet—which was to be Lydia's last collegiate race. That Saturday afternoon Lydia was running in the steeplechase final at Frostburg State University. She had felt fine before and immediately after the race, which incidentally she just won. After the race things took a turn for the worse. Lydia had become visibly upset, and her Dad noticed her eye was drooping. The mouth which only minutes before beaming smiles was now also drooping, and she couldn't squeeze her mother's hand. Though it was inconceivable, Lydia was exhibiting classic signs of stroke:  F (face) A (arm) S (speech) T (time is critical-call 911).  Lydia was then rushed to Cumberland’s local hospital. She was not improving and had lost all feeling on her entire left side. After the several CT scans, a clot was located in the right carotid artery in her brain. She was given the clot busting drug tpa, and medevaced by helicopter to University of Maryland Hospital Baltimore. Doctors there decided to perform an angioplasty (using advanced Trevo Retriever) surgery. They were able to retrieve one piece of the clot on the first pass, and after deliberating and weighing risks, went back in and retrieved another piece. When she arrived at the hospital in Baltimore, Lydia was fully paralyzed on her left side, to include her face, mouth, eye, arm, and leg. However, she has been blessed with an amazing recovery since then. She has spent many hours doing physical, occupational, and speech therapy, and Lydia is well on her way towards a full recovery.  Lydia is even looking forward to participating in this run alongside you, all her supporters!

Lydia has chosen YoungStroke as her charity of choice. YoungStroke is a 501(c)3 nonprofit advocacy organization. Through community-based programs, YoungStroke teaches awareness, prevention and recognition to raise public awareness of the increasing prevalence of stroke among young adults and its devastating impact upon community life.
