Matt's 10 x 10 "Virtual 10k" for Multiple Myeloma Research 2021
Matt's disease was in an advanced stage when diagnosed which made initial treatment a challenge. After meeting with Dr. Berenson and learning of the work and mission of the Institute for Myeloma and Bone Cancer Research, Matt chose a treatment path. The IMBCR, formed in 2003, is dedicated to advancing the treatment of myeloma by connecting possibility through scientific innovation leading to personalized and continuous optimized patient care. The personalized approach was vital for Matt.
Multiple Myeloma remains incurable. Often the disease will morph and become immune to drug regimens that had previously worked to stabilize the cancer. For example, Matt is currently on his sixth treatment regimen that includes a combo of three different drugs. New treatments have greatly extended survival rates and improved patients' quality of life. Hope for a cure has never been greater. The research done by the IMBCR turns hope into reality.
Through the support of donors, the IMBCR is able to reimagine drug development strategies for Multiple Myeloma and determine optimal and personalized combinations to maximize the benefits of existing and new treatment options for patients.
Surviving Myeloma is indeed a team effort. Family, friends and fellow patients have provided Matt with the support and inspiration needed to mentally manage the challenges of the disease. Additionally, having a supportive caregiver is important and Leslie, Matt's wife, has been a loving partner through all the ups & downs of the past ten years.
