Event: 2018 Shop With A Cop 5K
I will provide you an example of the experience that not only the child has during Shop with a Cop, but the family as well:
The night usually begins around 6:00pm. The children are dropped off by their parents, or if need be, picked up by an officer. They are provided pizza for dinner as well as desert. The children are then paired up with an officer who is usually accompanied by their significant other and driven to a department store. There the officers assist their children in finding shoes, clothes, and toys for not only the child but for their family members as well. We first put an emphasis on finding essential needs prior to the children selecting toys. Time at the department store can last two hours or more.
After shopping, the children are then transported back to the Belleview Police Department. In recent years they commonly are met by a local bike association who are helpful with donating bicycles and bike helmets to the children as well as their siblings. We help to insure that all children are then brought home with all the goodies they received that night.
On Christmas Eve or Christmas Day it is usual for the families to be delivered a full turkey dinner prepared by a local restaurant.
It is important to stress that not only do we focus on the one child for the night, but we do all we can to assist the entire family during the holiday. This program does rely on officers’ and their families as well that volunteer their time every year to keep this program possible.
This program not only provides the families with a better holiday, but we strive to build a relationship with these children to develop a positive attitude towards law enforcement and show them law enforcement is here to help
