Event: Summit 5k & Boot Runs

Proceeds will go to the Chama Valley Food Pantry to secure transportation to retrieve food supplies from Echo Food Bank in Farmington. Additional events from press release: Relive campfire life of Gene Autry and other western pioneers who made America great! Bring your family to Chama (camping out is encouraged) for an experience of a lifetime! Eat Dutch oven cooked favorites like biscuits, cornbread, beans, and chili around a cattle trail campfire. Listen and sing along to cowboy songs provided by local musicians as they play guitars, fiddles, and banjos. Take photos with renowned Apache Indian chief Renard Faber dressed in ceremonial headdress, real western cowboys dressed in leather chaps, ten-gallon hat, boots, and spurs. Pose for photos while sitting on a real stagecoach, mustang horse, and steam engine locomotive, while dressed up in leather chaps, red bandana, spurs, and ten-gallon hat, or prairie dress and bonnet. Sit on hay bales as you enjoy a starry night, while sipping a hot beverage and gazing into an open fire. Curl up in your tent and dream away the night. Wake up each morning to the smell of coffee, hot chocolate, and frying bacon. Breath in a lungful of cool mountain air while you shake the stress out of your body. Learn how to make leather pouches, toss a lariat, and saddle and bridle a horse. Horseback and stagecoach rides are available. Bring your children to a special children’s pioneer story hour or be a little more adventurous in the 12 to 15 year olds calf scramble, 12 & under lamb scramble. Watch the brave 5 year old and under mutton busters, ride against the clock. Learn how to kick-it-up with a little scoot-boot to the rhythm of stringed instruments and a harmonica.

EVENTS start on Saturday, June 30, 2018, with Draft Horse Show Competition (horse teams pulling wagons) at 9:00am; Grand Entry into the Rodeo Arena & Honoring our Veterans at 2pm; and activities like campfire meals, Hot air balloon launches, hiking, fishing, Dutch oven cook-offs, and pioneer-era music just to name a few of the activities continuing through Wednesday July 4th. A morning 5K Boot Run & Fun Walk marathon starts the day and a mid-day picnic where winners of the 5K Boot Run & Fun Walk marathon and costume contest will be announced. The evening opens with a very special and heart-moving flag-retirement Ceremony with Special recognition for veterans, warriors, local “heroes”, first responders, and law enforcement personnel. A gigantic fireworks display will complete the Chama Western Heritage Celebration around sundown accompanied by patriotic music. Veterans and persons currently serving in first-responder organizations are encouraged to wear complete uniforms or some identifying items to the July 4th events.

A special July 4th celebration steam engine Dinner Train is planned from Chama to and from the Cumbres Pass. Tickets & information are available at www.cumbrestoltec.com.
