A Reason to Run
So here you are, at the home of The Fizzy 5k Fundraising Event. Welcome! I imagine that within the last few moments, as you began to scan through the pages of our site and read the words of this very message, an important, driving question has crept its way into the back of your mind, and that question is; why? Why would you want to dedicate your Saturday, your day off, to running? Why would you want to risk having your clothing and skin coated in sticky soda foam that will make you adhere to every surface you sit on for the rest of the day? Why would you want to spend your hard earned money?
I wish I could give you a simple answer to these questions. But I can’t, because the answer involves so much more than just one day of soda and running. It is so much bigger than that, because it concerns a complicated, universal problem that affects more lives than we’d often like to admit – a problem that is poverty and hunger and fear and homelessness, all wrapped up into one.
That is why we at AGAPE created this event. Because we know that while we run our course, trying to beat the other teams to the finish line, a family may be sitting around their kitchen table, frantically racing to make ends meet, trying to beat the clock. That while we enjoy buying our post-race meals and tee-shirts, a woman in the community may be struggling to find enough food to fill her stomach and a shirt to cover her back. That while we dedicate a single day to our event, a man in the community may be agonizing about where he will spend his nights for the rest of the month.
This struggle is alive in our community and teamwork is essential to ending it. As you and your teammates work together to complete The Fizzy 5k relay race, you will simultaneously be teaming up with AGAPE to help us continue our mission of providing a central location in our community that serves residents in need by supplying essential items and amenities such as food, education, financial assistance, and clothing.
So perhaps I can give you a simple reason to run after all; because you care, and we at AGAPE care, and with your help, AGAPE can continue to serve the community we love and make an improvement in people’s lives.
