FAQ's

What is the date of the event?

The race will be held Sunday, January 8, 2017.

When does the race start?

The 5K will begin at 8:00 AM.  The 1-mile will start at 9:00 AM.

When and where is Packet Pick – Up?

Saturday, January 7, 2017 - 9:30AM - 6:00PM - McDonald's Ticket Office at Amalie Arena. You may use the 15 min. loading/unloading circle drive off of Channelside Drive to park. You may NOT leave your vehicle here for more than 15 minutes.

*We recommend picking up your packet on Saturday to avoid race morning delays. You will need to provide picture identification in order to retrieve your packet.

We offer both a 5K and 1-Mile distance

What is Extra Yard for Teachers?

Extra Yard for Teachers is the College Football Playoff Foundation’s primary philanthropic initiative to honor, celebrate, inspire and empower great teachers nationally and in the communities that host the College Football Playoff. Extra Yard for Teachers seeks to support teachers through the development and implementation of programs in four key focus areas: direct provision of resources, teacher recognition, professional development and leadership training, and by inspiring a college-going culture.

How will the winner of the College Football Playoff National Championship tickets be determined?

During the awards ceremony at approximately 10:00am, a member of the race staff will randomly select one (1) name from the list of paid registered race attendees as the winner of two (2) National Championship game tickets. The winner must be present to win and must show proof of identification.

How much does it cost to register for the 5K and/or 1 Mile Family Fun Run?

5K RACE
  • April 26th – November 1st (11:59pm) = $25/person
  • November 2nd – January 5th (11:59pm) = $30/person
  • January 8th (6:00am – 7:00am) = $35/person

*If you register 10 or more people at one time, registration will be $20/person (this only applies to those that register online, prior to January 5th)

1 MILE FAMILY FUN RUN
  • April 26th – January 5th (11:59pm) = $15/person
  • January 8th (6:00am – 7:00am) = $20/person
  • If you register more than one person, each additional person is $10 (this only applies to those that register online, prior to January 5th)

*If you register for the 5K, this does NOT include participation in the 1 Mile Family Fun Run – you must register separately for each race.

Are there any discounts available?

Special Teacher Discount: Teachers receive $10 off registration by entering the promo code “TEACHER” when registering through www.EY5K.com. Discount eligibility restrictions apply. Valid faculty or school staff ID and photo identification required at packet pick-up. Limit one discount per faculty/staff ID and offer is non-transferrable. 

What does my registration fee go towards?

100% of your registration fee goes toward the College Football Playoff Extra Yard for Teachers initiative which Honors, Celebrates, Inspires, and Empowers teachers.

Are there awards or prizes?

5K:

*Two (2) tickets to the College Football Playoff National Championship game will be awarded to the Top Overall Male and Top Overall Female in addition to one lucky registered race participant through a drawing at the conclusion of the race (must be registered to have a chance). Awards (NOT TICKETS) will also be given to the Top Male Master (40+), Top Female Master (40+) and the top (3) males and females in the following categories:

  • 14 and under
  • 15 - 19
  • 20 - 24
  • 25 - 29
  • 30 - 34
  • 35 - 39
  • 40 - 44
  • 45 - 49
  • 50 - 54
  • 55 - 59
  • 60 - 64
  • 65 - 69
  • 70 - 74
  • 75+

*You must be present to win the tickets to the College Football Playoff National Championship

1-Mile Family Fun Run:

There are no individual prizes or awards for the 1-Mile Fun Run

Will there be a bag check at the race?

There will NOT be a bag check on race day. All racers are responsible for storing their own items.

How do I get a race shirt?

The first 1,000 registered 5K participants will receive an Extra Yard 5K race shirt. Adult Male and Female sizing will be available. No youth sizes will be available. Shirts are NOT included in registration for the 1 Mile Family Fun Run.

When should I get to the Start Line?

5K participants should plan to be at the Start Line area by 7:45 AM. 1-Mile Family Fun Run participants should plan to be at the Start Line area by 8:45 AM.

Where is the Start Line?

Both races will begin on Channelside Drive near South Morgan Street and next to Amalie Arena.

Can I run both the 5K and 1 Mile Family Fun Run?

Participants may participate in both events; but must register separately for each event distance.

Will the Extra Yard 5K and/or 1 Mile Family Fun Run be cancelled for inclement weather?

The Extra Yard 5K and/or 1 Mile Family Fun Run will not be cancelled for inclement weather unless the weather is such that it will threaten the safety of the participants and attendees.

Where can I park?

Parking will be available for $5 in several lots surrounding Amalie Arena.  Lots are cash only.  Please be aware that event road closures and race morning traffic will add to congestion and likely increase your time to park.  We suggest arriving early and planning for delays.

Will there be food available before and after the race?

Yes, catering provided by The Columbia Restaurant will be available to race participants in Thunder Alley after the race. Please have your race bib visible.

Can someone else pick up my packet?

If you have completed your waiver, yes, someone else can pick up your packet.  That person must provide a photocopy of your photo ID in order to receive your packet.

How do I complete my waiver?

If you registered online, you have already completed your waiver.

How do I know if I have completed my waiver?

Waivers are completed by the person registering online.  If someone else registered for you, please confirm with that person that he/she completed a waiver for you prior to checking out.

What is the course like?

The race will begin next to Amalie Arena near the corner of Channelside Drive and South Morgan Street.  Both race distances will cross the Hillsborough River via Platt Street before turning onto scenic Bayshore Boulevard.  Both courses will utilize Bayshore Boulevard with turnaround points clearly marked for the 5K and 1-Mile distances.

Participants should line up according to their pace with the fastest runners lining up near the front.  Participants may walk, but should not walk in groups of more than three wide as to not impede the paths of others. 

Because the course is an “out and back” all runners are asked to stay on the right side of the road at all times.

Can I walk the course?

Absolutely!  Walkers are more than welcome to participate.  We ask that walkers line up behind other runners at the start of the event.  Walkers should not walk in groups of more than three wide as to not impede the paths of others.

Can I use a jogging/walking stroller?

Jogging/Walking strollers are permitted.  However, these participants must line up behind all other participants in their respective distances.  Bicycles, scooters, roller blades, and other forms of wheeled motorization are prohibited.

Can I bike/roller blade/scooter the course?

Bicycles, scooters, roller blades, and other forms of wheeled motorization are not permitted.  Walking/jogging strollers are permitted provided the participant begins behind all other participants.

Can I run/walk with my pet?

Pets are not permitted to run/walk with participants. Service animals are permitted.

Where can my family/friends watch the race?

Spectators will be able to view the race from several areas throughout the course as well as the Finish Line area.

Do I need my email confirmation?

Occasionally confirmation emails go into your spam or junk folder.  If you are unsure if you are registered, please email Jenna Smith at jsmith@growyourevent.com.  Email confirmations are NOT needed for packet pickup.

How can I confirm if I am registered?

Do you offer refunds or deferrals?

There are no refunds or deferrals.  The no-refund policy includes requests made due to injury, surgery, pregnancy, personal circumstances, date conflicts and professional commitments.

Can I transfer my registration to someone else?

Participants may not transfer their registration to someone else.
