Jade's Journey
Jade Cato is a bright, spunky 11-year-old who lights up every room she enters. She is the Cato family’s firstborn and the best big sister her little brother and sister could ever ask for. In February 2024, Jade began experiencing bone pain and wasn’t bouncing back after a stomach virus that affected the whole family. Concerned, her parents brought her to the doctor. After some blood work at the ER, they received the devastating news that Jade likely had leukemia. Further testing confirmed it: Jade was diagnosed with MPAL (mixed phenotype acute leukemia), an incredibly rare form of leukemia that combines two types of the disease.
Jade has faced this battle with remarkable strength and courage. She had good response to the highly toxic treatment, yet dealt with a lot of ups and downs: GI bleed from methotrexate, liver toxicity, blood and platelet transfusions, several neutropenia fevers and so on. However, her fight is far from over, with about two years of treatment ahead as she bravely tackles this disease.
Jade continues to inspire us all with her resilience and bravery. Let's run to cheer her up and lift up the spirit of Jade's family!
