Description
To celebrate and support our legacy of rebellious, tenacious women, we are hosting a 100-mile virtual challenge (commonly called a "century" in the cycling world) over the course of a month leading up to our founding date February 14th. You can cycle, run, swim, or walk--whatever is going to get you mileage! Individuals or teams can participate; there will be separate races for each.
Teams and individuals do not have to do the entire century all at once; they can spread the mileage out over the span of a month. In addition to the thrill of racing, we will be fundraising for the League of Women Voters of the St. Petersburg Area! There will be prizes for different fundraising, social media, and athletic challenges throughout the race to make this fun and competitive.
This race is meant to represent the legacy of fearless women who fought for suffrage and the activists that followed in their pedal straps. During the early part of the 20th century, the bicycle was a means for women to be independent and allowed suffragists and women's equality activists to further the women's rights movement. There were even political cartoons calling the "velocipedienne," or female cyclist, "obscene" and accusing her of causing accidents and being a threat to modesty by wearing pants! We want to continue the tradition of rebellious women sweating for equality by hosting a race for all rebels who believe in advancing suffrage for all in a year that calls for bravery and grit.
