About Cole Varnum & The Cole Varnum Agency:
Cole was only 21 years old when he unexpectedly passed away June 2, 2018 due to Sudden Cardiac Arrest from an unknown illness, Cardiomegaly (an enlarged heart). He graduated from Southland Academy in 2015 and was a current Psychology Major at Georgia Southwestern State University when he passed. He was very well-known and active member in the community, and he loved volunteering and helping others.
Proceeds from the race will benefit The Cole Varnum Agency. The Cole Varnum Agency was founded in memory of Cole Varnum, with intent to potentially save lives by raising public awareness of Sudden Cardiac Arrest. The goal is to be able to provide Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) to local schools, businesses, organizations, and individuals in the surrounding area who could possibly benefit from having one, as well as provide the opportunity for individuals to participate in AED/CPR training and heart screenings.
Specifically, with funds raised from this year’s race, I would like to begin planning a “Screen Your Teen” event where middle school and high school aged students can receive a free heart screening. This event is still in the pre-planning stages, but I have hopes to be able to host this in the Spring/Summer of 2022, making it an annual event. Although physicals are required to play sports and children have regular checkups with their doctors, heart conditions are sometimes over-looked. Unfortunately, this happened to my brother, and it could happen to you or someone you know and love as well. The purpose of the “Screen Your Teen” event is to hopefully detect unknown heart conditions in our local youth, enlighten the community of Sudden Cardiac Arrest and what measures to take if such were to occur, and to ultimately save lives!
