Description
The veterinary profession continues to face high levels of mental health concerns of which a large proportion of the general public is unaware. To raise awareness of these concerns in the veterinary field, we encourage participants to engage in physical activity. The goal is to accumulate purposeful miles doing any activity of choice. Some event options in which to participate include, Race Around the World and Out of the Darkness events (see below), or you can attend your own local event or participate with your own individual activity at your leisure. This is a virtual event that can take place wherever you are.
Consider these in-person events to log your miles:

- Walk in Augusta, GA on 28 Sep 2023: American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP)
While running, biking, or however you choose to log your miles, we encourage you to use the time to consider the challenges facing this profession, as well as some ways to show your support. Examples include sending a Thank You note to your local veterinarian, posting a positive Yelp/ online review for your veterinarian, or even just educating your friends and family about the challenges they face. Logging Miles: Participants registered through this platform will log their miles through this website once the event starts on 2 Sep 2023. Please note: You will not see the ability to log miles until 2 Sep 2023. Please return to this website on or after that date to log miles that you accrue from 2 Sep 2023 -27 Sep 2023. Participants can log miles whenever they would like (daily, weekly, all at the end, etc). Although the event ends on 27 Sep, you have until 30 Sep to finish logging all the miles that you accrued during this time.

Debbie Stoewen, in her article for The Canadian Veterinary Journal, identifies work-related stressors, professional isolation, attitudes to death and euthanasia, and access to and knowledge of means among nine likely factors affecting this rate.
