Have you ever wanted to catch or maybe chase a unicorn? Here is your chance, and all for a good cause. Fleet Feet Savannah/Pooler is partnering with our good friends at Honor and Grace Tattoo to raise money for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). In the type 1 diabetes community, "catching a unicorn" refers to the "magical" moment when you get a blood sugar reading of exactly 100 on your meter and/or continuous glucose monitor.
This family friendly fun run will start at Fleet Feet Savannah (3405 Waters Avenue). Runners will chase our mystery runner, dressed as a unicorn, thru a local neighborhood route. Following the run - stay for an afternoon of fun! There will be food trucks, music, tie-dye race shirts, and dunk tank!! Don't miss an opportunity to dunk Mike Nadeau and Kelly Border. Mike is the owner of Fleet Feet Savannah/Pooler and Kelly is the owner of Honor and Grace tattoo (and mom of Grace)!
Kelly and Gracie's Story:
On December 27th, our whole lives changed.
For a few weeks prior to that day, I had noticed some subtle changes in Gracie's routines. Urinating more frequently, tired, and very emotional. I wasn't too concerned until she started having to go to the bathroom every 20 minutes and started having night time accidents, totally unusual for her. We had a hunch that we might need to look into her blood sugar so the day after Christmas we got a glucometer and tested her. Her BGL number was 700, and not knowing any better I didn't panic. But my husband, her daddy, a career firefighter/emt sure did and off to the hospital we went with an official Type 1 Diabetes diagnosis for our eight year old daughter.
Talk about devastating, shocking, and beyond surreal. A friend of ours who is also a T1D told us about Rufus the teddy bear that the JDRF provides free of cost for newly diagnosed Type 1 kids. And he was so crucial in helping Gracie learn about herself, her body, and her new normal. That was our introduction to the JDRF and their resources and support networks have been vital to us navigating this disease.
I want to raise as much money as possible for the JDRF so hopefully one day no one will have to receive the diagnosis Gracie did. The money will help JDRF fund critical research to progressively remove the impact of T1D from people's lives until no one has to fear developing the disease.
JDRF is the leading global organization funding type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. Their mission is Improving lives today and tomorrow by accelerating life-changing breakthroughs to cure, prevent and treat T1D and its complications
